A Focus on Buses in Calverley & Rodley

Thanks to those who have emailed or visited recent surgeries to discuss the number 60/60a and number 30 bus routes.

Regarding the number 60/60a bus, I have spoken to the operator regularly and a lot of the issues were down to not having enough fleet, caused by issues getting parts for some vehicles, as well as delays getting new buses for the 36 route. This led to the issues of far too many cancellations, switching of routes, and using single-deckers instead of larger buses when too many buses were out of operation.

They have been refurbishing and re-painting a number of buses, which in recent days have started being used on this route. This should improve the issues, however we haven’t seen the latest figures yet so we will be monitoring to ensure the expected improvement does come forward.

Regarding the number 30 bus, many have contacted or visited to talk about the unreliability of this route, with it not turning up many times leaving people stranded. This route is contracted and paid for by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority so is not getting value for taxpayers money.

They have spoken to the operator to raise these issues, and have also arranged for some of our contract compliance officers to travel on the service to see the issues firsthand and be able to feed them back so they can be enforced. Hopefully this should see improvements, otherwise the contract will be at risk.

In the longer term I would like to see this route replaced with a much broader service that could link the area better, covering a longer span of the day serving important links such as to the train station, Pudsey, Horsforth and other nearby communities. We will keep campaigning for this, as the current service is not providing value for money, or a useful service for residents.
